How Burglar Alarms Work: Guard Dog Analogy

One traditional way of setting up an alarm is leashing a dog outside your house. Your dog can react two ways when it sees a stranger: first, if the person coming is his master then he will greet by silently wagging his tail and second if the person coming is a stranger it will react by barking. This noise that the dog creates attracts attention to anyone, including the owner that there is a stranger is nearby. The bark of the dog is a form of an alarm that stimulates vigilance in the people within the vicinity.

The Difference between the Old and the New

Burglar alarms works the same way with having a dog in your home. First they need a position to be placed, second they need a trigger to create an alarm and third they send warning signals by creating loud noises. The only difference between the two is that burglar alarms require less management and maintenance compared to your pet dog.

Where to Place your Alarm

How burglar alarms work is like how a pet dog works, it is more like having a electronic dog. First the sensors are placed in strategic locations, usually vulnerable places in the house like the big kitchen windows, backyard gate or the backdoor. These are locations where an intruder has a greater chance of entering the house.

Then you have the siren which makes the noise. It must also be strategically placed in an area where there are no barriers to the flow of the sound so that the home owner and other people within the surrounding vicinity can hear the alarm. The control panel, as its name suggests, has the main operating button and is also strategically placed in areas where it is less likely to be seen by the intruder but easy enough to be located by the owner.

The Guard Dog Analogy

This is how a burglar alarms works, if a person has a plan of breaking in into a house with security alarm the most possible places that the stranger would enter are those places where he is likely to be caught, like back doors and windows. The sensor will detect the intruders in different ways. If the intruders will pass through the windows window, sensors will detect the vibration that the intruder is making by forcing himself into the house using the window.

Sensors can come in different types as well. Other sensors like thermal sensors are placed in door knobs and detects slight thermal changes in the metallic materials of the door knob, while motion sensors detects the intruders by sensing the motion made by the intruders.

Ring the Alarm!

Signals in the form of current or radio frequencies to the siren are sent once the sensors are activated or tripped. When the siren receives these signals it will start alarming by making loud noises attracting both the attention of the owner and the intruders. Usually some burglar alarm systems are connected to a monitoring station usually a police station. The control panel has the control buttons which is pressed to stop the alarm.

Burglar alarms may have different models and designs, some are wireless while some are hard-wired, but either way how a burglar alarms works the same way.
