Sorry, internet marketers, but your industry is a freaking joke. You mined us suckers really well for a long time, but it's time to stop.
And no, I'm not an internet marketer myself. I have nothing to gain by writing this, except that I'm sick of getting ripped off. Here's my reasoning:
First, building a web site is easy. You can go to a hosting provider and have them set up Wordpress for you. 10 minutes later, for $50 or so, you can have a great design installed and you're off and running. Don't even want to do that much? Fine. Go on Elance and hire someone for $200 to set the site up.
And NO ONE can write content for your company like you can. You understand your business and industry and have lots of good ideas. So write some cool stuff every day, put it up on your new site and you're good to go. Or hire someone for $20 an article.
Think an internet marketing consultant can help you get a top ranking in the search engines? Think again. No one outside of Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! knows what makes a site rank. So paying an 'expert' to move you up gets you nothing.
Plus, it's a losing proposition from the start. Unless you're the first person in your industry to build a web site, your competitors have invested a lot of time and money in building their rankings and PPC (pay per click) campaigns. You can't beat them by going head-to-head.
Fifth, there is NO WAY TO TELL who's capable and who's not. Go search for 'internet marketing' on Google. Look at the top 20 sites. Try to figure out which ones are good and which ones stink. You can't. Everyone talks a good game. So, chances are you're going to get ripped off. Why spend the time on it when you can teach yourself and do almost as good a job? The answer is there's no reason to bother. So don't.
It's way too expensive. One guy told me he'd charge me $5000 a month for an SEO campaign (search engine optimization). $5000?!!! I'd have to quintuple my sales to make that pay. Forget it.
And the rules change so fast that you might spend that $5000, move up for a little while, do some e-mail and bam, six months later you have to start over again.
Do yourself a favor: Stop paying for internet marketing. Use the money to improve your own skills and market your business. In the long run, it's a better investment
