How Computers Have Revolutionized Our World

By Theodore Cartman

There has been nothing quite like personal computers in our modern world. They have totally changed the way we live and work not to mention the way we communicate and interact. Back in the 1930s, a researcher named Konrad Zuse produced what was then a prototype of the first computer ever called the Z1 computer. This was still a far cry from what we have today but it nevertheless formed the necessary foundation for others to build upon which they did to produce the sophisticated machines that we have today.

That computer laid the groundwork for further research by others. In 1944, two men named John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry from Iowa University produced several innovations of the computer based on Zuse's model. It was capable of producing simple to moderately complex arithmetic calculations and small but simple computing tasks.

In the 1950s, IBM, the business machines maker, worked with researchers from Harvard University to produce what was then the world's first sophisticated computer. But even then, computers were still larger than they are today and also used a lot of energy to run.

Computers have completely changed the way the world lives and works. Today, we encounter them in almost every office although there are still many regions in the world where they are yet to make an impact. All in all, working without computers is inefficient and cumbersome. Take for instance calculations. It would take days if not years for companies to do simple calculations especially if they have lots of material and inventory. Computers simplify all this and allow businesses to become more agile.

Another use of computers is communication. With computers has come the wondrous world of the Internet or what is called in other circles, the World Wide Web or Information Superhighway. As much as computer has changed the way we work, they have also revolutionized the way we communicate. The term "the world is a smaller place" or phrases like "global market place".

Computers have made communication so easy and seamless we can now reach out to others across the globe instantaneously. Email, chat rooms, Instant Messaging and Video Messaging has almost resulted in the eradication of snail mail.

All this is because people now sit behind a computer and email back and forth. To go even further, specialized Internet software run by many major companies such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Google has made it possible to chat in real time with someone on the other side of the globe. Video conferencing has also been made possible. This has completely changed the way we conduct meetings.

Businesses have benefitted tremendously owing to the advent computers. Companies can even open virtual branches in other countries without necessarily being there physically. Banks can even run on the Internet without possessing actual premises. Such has been the impact of computers to modern life. Sometimes they also have their own disadvantages in that some people accuse them of causing some to be thoroughly anti-social. It is also easy for some to develop multiple identities online to mask their true selves.
