How the PS3 Came to be

A third home video gaming console has been made available to the general public by Sony Computer Entertainment under the name of PlayStation 3. It is officially marketed as PLAYSTATION 3 and abbreviated as PS3.

PS3 is the third and the latest in the PlayStation series which was launched way back in 2004. PS3 is the successor to PlayStation 2. It has competition in the market under the brand name of Nintendos Wii and Microsofts Xbox 360.PS3 is the seventh generation video gaming console.

PS3 competes with Nintendos Wii and Microsofts Xbox 360 in the market and is a part of the seventh generation video gaming console.

Some other noteworthy features include the PlayStations robust network capabilities and its connectivity with PlayStation Portable.

PS3 also uses the Blu-ray disc format, which is the latest high-definition optical disc format in the market. Blu-ray is used by PS3 as a storage media. PS3 is the first Blu-ray player in the market which is Blu-ray 2.0 compliant.

PS3 was launched in different countries successively. It was first released in Japan, then in North America and lastly in Europe and Oceania. In Japan, the date of release was November 11, 2006, while in North America it was November 13, 2006. In Europe and Oceania, it was released in March 2007 due to technical problems cited by Sony.

Two models were available at the launch. The basic model has 20 GB hard drive while the premium had 60 GB hard drive. The premium model also supported several additional features; therefore it was value for money. But since then several modifications have been made to the PS3s available models.

The history of PS3 goes back to 2005 when it was first shown to general public by Sony during the E3 conference. Later that year, it was displayed in the Tokyo game Show as well. But the functional version was missing at both the events. The demos were held on some PC hardware. The initial model or prototype had two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports, and six USB ports.
