Paper Bags Withstand Competition From Plastic Bags

By Simon Green

With the growth of retail shopping has also come the growth in shopping bags because after all it would not make much sense to make a purchase of groceries or retail items and not have a way to carry them. Currently, the retail shopping bag market is dominated by plastic bags and paper bags. Plastic bags have been widely popular because they are strong, are water-proof and can also be embroidered with marketing advertisements. Paper bags on the other hand are also stronger these days especially when we're referring to the square-bottom ones. They are also thicker and therefore do not easily come apart like before even in the face of water. So can paper bags compete effectively against plastic bags? The answer is yes.

In many supermarkets and retail chains nowadays, shoppers are the chance to choose between paper and plastic. Some chose both. While paper bags have been getting a lot of competition from plastic bags, they have been holding their own quite comfortably. One of the reasons why this is so is because they are safe. This feeling mostly comes from people who have younger children. It is a well-known fact that when children get a hold of plastic bags they can cause a lot of damage including to themselves. This is because it is easy to wear a plastic bag over one's head. Many deaths and injuries by asphyxiation have been caused by plastic bags especially when they get into the wrong hands. Paperon the other hand have little risk of causing damage unless if ingested and that is not very common. It is therefore understandable when parents of small children prefer and choose paper to plastic.

Another reason why paper bags still hold their clout is because not only do they serve a great purpose, they are cheap as well. In these tough economic times, many companies, especially retail want to save money while at the same time preserve their quality of service. When it comes to big retailers, paper bags make sense because they serve all the same purposes plastic bags serve all while being much cheaper.

Paper bags have not been without critics however. One of the criticism has been that paper bags are not water-proof which makes them annoying especially if one is carrying groceries such as fruits and vegetables which tend to be wet when being purchased. This renders the bag wet and therefore subject to tear. Many have experienced the inconveniencing annoyance of having a bag burst at the bottom and spill all its contents even before the shopper gets to his or her destination. This has made people avoid them all together.

Paper bags also have severe limitations when it comes to being reusable. While plastic bags can easily be reused to carry something else and even as crude trash bags, paper bags cannot and once they are used once they are good to be trashed themselves.
